Awesome Ants
It’s getting to be that time of year when the leaves begin to turn, there’s a slight chill in the air, and the days are getting shorter. Autumn. My favorite time of the year.
There’s a stretch of a two weeks on most trout streams across the nation in the fall that can rival any hatch throughout the year, and it’s often overlooked. It’s not technically a hatch. It considered a “fall”. The migrating winged ant fall.
With the turning of the season, ants hatched in their underground colonies sprout wings. The ants fly off to do their mating thing. After they ensure the next generation, they die off. The ants are attracted to the water and trout key in on them. Most hatches are done for the year, and this becomes one of their mainstay forages items on the surface.
