Some of the greatest features of an Elk Hair Caddis is that they are super buoyant and "skitter" across the water without creating drag. Why purple? Because purple catches trout. It's one of the most visible colors in the water column and fish are highly attracted to it. I remember when the purple haze came out and people scoffed at it. Well, it certainly catches fish, now doesn't it. I'm not what one would call a purest who will only use the traditional pattern. Well, those were new and innovative back in the day. It wasn't until everyone realized they caught fish until they became traditional. I like what catches fish and this pattern is the first one I tie on when caddis are about.
