Kayak Fly Fishing Classic - Winner Tony Lai
Well I've been on the road working as a Millwright and just got back from working Icast for the last week. I saw KFC was throwing a fly fishing tournament so I decided to fish it.
I started the day throwing the mullet fly and caught my first fish early in the AM and shortly after caught an upgrade on my snook at 24.7" 20 minutes after.
The wind picked up so it was hard to present my bait. So, I got out and waded around. I fished another couple hours but no bites. I decided to make a move.
The second spot I knew I could catch me a red and a trout to finish my slam. I paddled in a spot that I usually do well in and was cut off by a charter boat throwing cut bait. I was pretty ticked off but kept my cool and was rewarded -another school! Unfortunately, I spooked the school because I was coming in hot and ran them over.
Then I cut across to another little opening in the spoil islands and stuck an 18-20" red - but came unbuttoned. Took a lot to clear my mind and keep chucking. But then I turned the corner and seen a solo redfish.
My first cast with the Mullet fly fishing fly, I lined the fish spooking it one way then I immediately made another cast spooking it again. On my third cast, I got him to chase the fly - that’s where I stop it and gave it a few quick twitches... and that’s where he inhaled it!
Redfish measured 28.7". Then I tied a Clouser on and finished up my slam with a trout close to 13".
