Fly Boxes – What to look for in a Fly Box

Fly fishing requires you to bring along a bunch of gear. Flies, rods, reels, and other accessories are just some essential things to pack before leaving for your weekend fishing trip.

Fly boxes are a great way of organizing your flies so you are more effective on the water.  There are boxes and storage options for every type of fly.   I carry a fly box for dries, nymphs, streamers, and then a hatch specific box.   I don’t necessarily take them all out on the water, but it helps me get to the right bug quickly for the fishing I’m going to be doing.

Availability of Sizes

Fly storage come in different sizes to suit every type of application.   Small boxes are ideal for a small quantity of hatch specific flies or a handful of streamers for those that light to go light.

Larger boxes with a lot of storage are great for large pockets in your vest or pack that can store upwards of 300 flies.  These are great when you want to carry a wide variety of flies.   I’ll routinely have one for dry flies in my left vest pocket and one for wet flies in my right.   The waters I fish have a great variety of insects, so that’s what I carry.

There are also great boxes for streamers.  Whether its our articulated box or the traditional large cavity boxes, these are specialty boxes meant for streamers..

Durable and Long Lasting

Fly boxes are made of strong materials that can take a good beating.
