River Report: Arkansas

Well, things have been a little erratic in the natural state the last several weeks. It’s Arkansas, so if you don’t like the weather, just wait 15 minutes, it will change. We’ve had temperature ranges from the 40’s all the way up to the 80’s over the last few week.

I did get the chance to breakaway and fish for a couple ours this past Saturday. The Spring River proved to be pretty formidable. The river was loaded with floater (folks in canoes and rafts enjoying the outdoors on the river). It was also pretty muddy due to the rains in Missouri running down. My fishing partner managed to catch one on a spinner, but the fly fishing was off. I spent more time dodging the floaters I think.

I’m looking for to this coming weekend at the Little Red (Hopefully I will get off from work!) The forecast is calling for rain and temps to be in the 90’s, but I gotta get out and get a line wet. This could change the water conditions pretty quickly.

When we’ve been on fish, the more productive flies have been wooly buggers, nymphs, and midges. A double nymph rig has been the set up on the Norfork and White River as well. The warmer weather is going to get the dry fly action though so make sure you have all the bugs you need and stock up at RiverBum.

I’m also considering a Kayak trip to the Buffalo River. Anyone that might want to join, let me know. It should be a smallmouth extravaganza!
